Dear Country Valley Farm Community,

This is week #19 of the 2023 season – Autumn begins next week! Many folks’ memberships will be expiring around week #20. If you would like to extend your membership, we would love that. We have plenty of produce planned to get the whole member-base through the remainder of the year. There are many ways you can extend your share. You can send us an email and then pay by check or cash, at one of the upcoming deliveries; or pay by Venmo, or if you’d like to pay by credit card on our website that is great too.

For folks that reached out about when their membership expires – I will be going through our records this coming week and will send everyone individually a detail of what you signed up for, if you had skip weeks, and when your last share is.

Thank you for your support and participation. It means a whole lot and makes a big difference.

This week’s shares contain the following, some preparation inspiration is below:

  1. Jimmy Nardello Peppers – 1 pint from our farm
  2. Candy Cane Sweet Peppers – 1 pint from our farm
  3. Green Cabbage – 1 nice head from Cinzori Farm of Ceresco, MI
  4. Red Long of Florence Onions – 1 pint from Cinzori Farm
  5. Red Slicer Tomatoes – 1 quart from Sunnyside Produce of Homer, MI
  6. Sweet Potatoes – 1 pint from Sunnyside Produce
  7. Gala Apples – 4 apples from Almar Orchard of Flushing, MI

Medium shares contain the above listed items, and:

  1. Red Slicer Tomatoes – 1 extra quart
  2. Sweet Potatoes – 1 extra pint
  3. Gala Apples – 4 extra apples

Some preparation inspiration: Remember to wash all produce thoroughly.

  • Jimmy Nardello – these heirloom Italian Frying Peppers are legendary and creating quite a bit of culinary excitement all over. They are best fried, often with onions and sausage or beans, or grilled whole.
  • Candy Cane Sweet Peppers – a unique variegated pepper that is very sweet and crunchy. We like them for snacking or in salads.
  • Green Cabbage – excellent raw as a salad or slaw green, or cooked any way you like. These nice sized heads have a lot of food and freshness in them.
  • Red Long of Florence Onions – also known as torpedo onions and very similar to Red Long of Tropea. These heirloom long onions are very mild and sweet. They can be eaten raw, they also are wonderful on the grill. Slice them lengthwise for some fun plate presentation.
  • Red Slicer Tomatoes – we are loving the tomatoes from this Amish community this year. They have a long history of growing tomatoes, and their experience is shown in the exceptional flavor and texture that the tomatoes offer. Savoring the summer flavors while we still can!
  • Sweet Potatoes – these are the Beauregard variety which is legendary for classic sweet potato flavor and eating quality. They are the perfect size to bake up or peel and cook.
  • Gala Apples – a nice sweet early season apple that is great for fresh eating. We are thankful to start the apple season off with this variety. Enjoy! Next week’s shares will have Macintosh Apples in them.

What is going on at the Farm:

We will include a detailed update next week.

Here is the plan for deliveries:

Route:

8-10AM      Ypsilanti and Milan

9AM-1PM    Ann Arbor

12PM-2PM   Canton, Plymouth, and Northville

1PM-3PM    Farmington, Farmington Hills and Bloomfield Hills

2PM-5PM    Troy, Hazel Park, Gross Pointe, Detroit

We understand that there may be weeks that folks want to skip their share. That is okay so long as you confirm with us at least 7 days in advance of the skip week. In those cases, you can let us know if you want to add a share to the end of your season, or receive double shares some weeks etc. We encourage members to find a friend, family member, or neighbor to pick up your share from your porch and share the bounty of the harvest, instead of skipping weeks – if that is a viable option for you. Some members opt to notify us of skip weeks and ask that we donate the shares – we are happy to do that. We don’t donate to a food bank in those instances, we give the food directly to our neighbors or folks in the community that would benefit from it.

Email is the best way to communicate with me. My phone number is (831) 706-1237. You can call or text if it is the day of or day before delivery if you have anything urgent to communicate. I don’t usually check emails much over the weekend but I do have my phone on me if you need to touch base.

There is lots of good info on our website www.countryvalleyfarm.com

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions at all.

Thank you for sharing this message and our contact info with anyone who you know who may be interested.  We appreciate the community support.

Kind regards,
