Hi Everyone,
This is our Summer Solstice share – we are extra packing it some this week. We hope everyone is enjoying the longer and longer days, we sure are . Garlic is the crop we devote the most space and time to, and it is a nice indicator of how the season is moving along. Did you know that we grow 12 different varieties of garlic on our farm? We are excited to share the different varieties over the weeks of the CSA and hear your perspective on how they each compare as we delve into the nuances each variety brings.
We are resuming having all CSA members pick up shares between 2:30 and 5:30 at Genesis of Ann Arbor (Temple Beth Emeth/St Clare’s Episcopal Church) 2309 Packard Ann Arbor, MI. We will be in the front circle drive.
A bit about Garlic Scapes: They are the flowering shoot that emerges from the top middle of hardneck garlic plants about a month or so before the garlic harvest begins – 1 scape per plant, 1 garlic bulb per plant. We will discuss the difference between the 2 types of garlic, hardneck and softneck, in a future newsletter. Scapes are a regional and seasonal specialty and have many uses. They are similar to green garlic in flavor, milder than regular garlic bulbs but juicy and garlicky all the same. Garlic scape pesto, roasted or grilled scapes, in soup, in hummus or other dips, stir-fried, sauteed, on their own, with almost any other food…
